The article deals with the evolution of the interpretation of "youth subculture" concept that reflects one of the most common phenomena in modern society. Particular attention is paid to consideration of this concept in Chicago School as deviant behavior, where the reasons for youthquakes and the causes of organization and existence of youth subculture movements are investigated. We have analyzed the bullet points of the representatives of The Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies, who believe that youth subculture does not always oppose the dominant system of values in society, and defended the idea of youth subcultures diversity. The article studies such contemporary notions of subcultures as neo-tribes, lifestyles, scenes, and milieu. It has been concluded that in modern society the fundamental changes in the nature of subcultures take place, and their diversity indicates the viability and stability of the social organism.
