The article examines the stages of the formation of the US legal system in the 19th century. The article examines aspects from the adoption of the Constitution of 1787 and the Bill of Rights to the processes of codification at the state level and the influence of conflicts on the formation and development of legislation. Particular attention is paid to the establishment of the judiciary in 1789, the consolidation of case law and the establishment of judicial review through the decision of Marbury v. Madison, as well as large-scale codification projects, in particular the Code of the State of New York of 1828. An analysis of the experience of regulating slavery and the consequences of the Civil War, as well as the emergence of the legal community - the first law schools and bar associations are made. Using the historical and legal method, conclusions are made about the legacy of the 19th century in modern American jurisprudence.
