The problem of theatrical space is relatively new in Russian historical research, not to mention regional studies. In this regard, the issues of the development of theatrical space in Ulan-Ude are of interest both from the perspective of the specifics of its localization, and with regard to the lack of research on this topic. An important component of the research was the definition of the terms “cultural space” and “theatrical space”, as well as identification of the key approaches to the study of the latter and its structure. Since most of researchers consider theatrical space only in the context of cultural studies and art history, we have applied the conclusions obtained within the framework of these disciplines to the historical narrative and made it possible to identify the theatrical and spatial trend and its periods in accordance with the historical and cultural stages of the country's development. So, we have come to the conclusion that in the 1920-1930s the active development of the professional theatrical space took place in the republic, which center was the capital of Buryatia - Ulan-Ude. That processes was conditioned by the entire previous course of cultural development, and their subsequent expansion followed the path of the formation of national and specialized theaters using the potential of creative unions and educational institutions.
