The article studies the nature and functions of the photographic ekphrasis in L. Petrushevskaya's early fairy tale play The Suitcase of Nonsense, or Quickly Done Cannot Be Well Done (1975). The questions of interaction of literature and photography, photography in literature, photoekphrasis in the drama and its theatrical interpretation are considered. The creative potential of photographic discourse is confirmed. It is proved that the play under study reflects the basic features of Petrushevskaya's poetics and demonstrates the author's affinity for the heroes-"creators" (photographer, tailor and enchantress). The authors conclude that in the play photoekphrasis is only presented in the dialogues of the first scene, and it performs, first of all, expositive and metatheatrical functions. With its help, the main and supporting characters are introduced and characterized, the situation of absurd transformations is created, the wordplay and the clownery appear. The comic reflection of the process of photographing, the photographer's activity, the mimetic nature of photography and its functions reveals a conflict of visibility and essence. The visualization of the metaphor in objects and actions and the verbalization of the metaphor in remarks, monologues and dialogues create infinite possibilities for the intermedial play and interpretation for the director and reader / spectator.
