The French novel in illustrations of XVIII century: interior modelling as a scene of action (dialogue of writer and artist)

The article is devoted to the problem of interaction of the text and image in the French literary illustration of the XVIIIth century. The author pays special attention to the methods of the French illustrators and regards the interior as a scene of action of illustrations for the novel. The author studies the interior modelling in illustrations as a result of the dialogue of the artist and the writer. The article gives the interior analysis based on the illustrations by H.Gravelot for the novel «Julia, or New Heloise» by J.-J.Rousseau, which allows comparing Gravelot's interior models and Rousseau's interior concepts. The author emphasizes the value of "Transition style" for disclosing of the plot of the novel and characterises the interior functions in the illustrations.
