Functional and pragmatic features of suffixed shortenings ending in -ie / y (based on the English language material)

The article deals with the functional and pragmatic features of suffixed shortenings ending in -ie/y. Basing on the assumption that pragmatic information is contained in the word itself, the author proves by the specific examples that pragmatic colouring of shortenings under consideration is implemented according to the pragmatic meaning of the suffix -ie/y which amplifies the lexical meaning of the truncated stem. Furthermore, the work presents some new meanings of this suffix found out in the process of suffixed shortenings’ analysis.
