Functioning of toponyms in the meaning «relief, natural objects» in the language of region

The article presents an issue of a regional toponymic system formation on the basis of geographic names of Volgograd region. A field-like approach to a language unit system development is employed to bring to light functional and semantic unity of Russian language units as belonging to different synchronic levels (period from end. XIX - beg. XXI cen.). In the frame of a certain segment of a field model proper names are presented as a subsystem.
