Hemolytic transfusion reactions

A review of the literature on hemolytic transfusion reactions is presented. A brief description of the epidemiology of this formidable complication of blood and blood component transfusion is given. The basic principles of prevention and treatment of various types of post-transfusion hemolysis are given in the context of a growing need for transplantation of allogeneic organs and tissues, increase in life expectancy of patients regularly receiving blood transfusion. The conclusion is drawn about the need for systematic training of doctors for adequate preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic actions when faced with a hemolytic transfusion reaction an infrequent but serious adverse effect of transfusion therapy.
