Genesis of the image of a boat-church by Tertullian

In this article the explanation of the use of the "boat" image (Mt. 8:23-27, 14:22-33) by Tertullian as an allegory of the Church (De bapt. 12, 7) is proposed by proceeding from the traditional perception of it in two aspects: as preexistent Church and historical Church (сf. Clem. II Cor. 14, 1-2; Herm. 8,1-8,2 and 9,1-21,4). Furthermore, it is proved, that the considered passage is a reminiscence of the ode of Horace (Carm. I, 14), which Quintilianus interprets allegorically (Instit. VIII, 6, 44). It is confirmed by verbal likeness between De bapt. 12, 7 and Carm. I, 14, the probable familiarity of Tertullian with the Quintilianus' writings and repeated mentions of Roman political facts in the ecclesiological context.
