The article was devoted to the discussion of the first data on variability of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) pool of the Altai ancient Turkic population. Peculiarities of the mtDNA lineage pattern are considered in the context of genetic roots of ancient Turkic populations. A comparison with preceding populations traditionally regarded as a potential source of ancient Turkic population (Scythian-Siberian groups and Xiongnu) was conducted. Similarities and differences between ancient and preceding populations of Central Asia were ascertained. An increased role of East-Eurasian components od the mtDNA pool were was shown, that apparently associated with genetic influence of the populations from more eastern and southern regions of Asia.
