The article attempts to analyze one of the episodes of the Civil War in the south of Russia, namely the opposition of the Voluntary Army under the command of General Denikin and the North Caucasus Army and later the 11th and 12th Armies of the Southern Front of the RSFSR that had changed several commanders over the period. The position of the opposing armies on the eve of the defeat of the Red forces in the North Caucasus at the turn of 1918-1919 has been shown. The new archival data from SARF, RSMA and RSASPH have been introduced into scientific circulation.
