According to the records of the Agricultural Census of 1917, the population of the Russian Empire was divided into categories that corresponded to the existing economic structures. The author considers the peasant way of life, which was established in the Olekminsky district of the Yakut province. The article describes the peasant settlements of the district, analyses the number of people, and examines the economic life by case study of two settlements. Using archived data, i.e. the census forms, which were the main census records, the author shows the life of peasants on the eve of the social changes.
