As a result of the microbiological examination of 81 samples of synovial fluid, joint capsules and surrounding tissues in patients with the diseases of large joints 45 cultures of microorganisms have been isolated. An overwhelming majority of them (74.6%) was represented by gram-positive cocci (Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Enterococcus). Anaerobic non-sporulating bacteria (Bacteroides fragilis, Gemella morbillorum) were isolated in 5.5% of cases; Non-fermentating gram-negative bacilli accounted for 13.8% of all the cultures. It has been demonstrated that in case of the hip involvement bacteria are isolated 1.7-fold more often in comparison with the knee involvement.
