The charismatic movement as the face of aggiornamento: some notes for the anniversary of the renewal in the Roman Catholic Church

The charismatic renewal as the second wave of the Pentecostal Movement is connected with a desire to reform the spiritual life of traditional religious confessions. Te charismatic phenomenon appears as part of certain cyclic paterns in the religious atmosphere of American society, and is fully part of the paradigm of Revivalism. Tus we can speak of the Charismatic Movement as a relatively new phenomenon. In the second part of the 20th century, the Charismatic Movement began its mission in the Roman Catholic Church, which had, until then, maintained the status quo in its evaluation of outbursts of religious feeling. Since this was a completely new phenomenon within a traditionally oriented Church, the Movement achieved an impressive success, and was thus seen as something within the bounds of the post- Vatican II spirit of aggiornamento. In connection with the jubilee of the Charismatic Movement in the Roman Catholic Church, the author of this article atempts to answer some questions about its origin and the causes of its subsequent fate within the Roman Catholic Church.
