Surgical treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism with rare ectopy of parathyroid adenoma

The majority of parathyroid glands adenomas can be achieved by a surgeon cervical approach, but in about 2% of the cases the ectopic gland is in the mediastinum in alocation that requires a thoracic approach. These cases present diagnostic and therapeuticdifficulties. The use of a combination of instrumental techniques (US, scintigraphy CT andSPECT) enabled to establish, prior to surgery a parathyroid adenoma in the mediastinumthat was localized to the aortopulmonary window. Mini-invasive surgery proved to be theoptimal technique to performing a targeted surgical excision that reduced the operative timeand the hospitalisation.
