The ideas of the perfection of penitentiary system in the works by Jeremy Bentam

The article is devoted to the analysis of the views of the Britain philosopher and lawyer J. Bentam concerning to the problems of the development of the penitentiary system. The author argues that Bentam based his theory on the utilitarian paradigm and humanistic principles of the Enlightenment. His engineering design of panoptic prison, elaborated in the fundamental volume named Panopticon, was realized in the Russian Empire.
