Here we study the patterns in the usage of the names of Russian tsars (grand dukes, emperors) in present-day Russian mass media. Some names important for the Russian history and culture, e.g. Alexander Nevskii, Ivan Kalita, Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, etc. have been analyzed. Denotational and connotational (metaphorical) usage of these names nave been differentiated.
