The article was written as part of the 2024 state assignment. The Indian Ocean is located between four continents - Africa, Asia, Australia and Antarctica. Soviet exploration of the Indian Ocean began in 1946. Numerous underwater gorges, canyons, mountain peaks, etc. have been examined in detail and mapped. Many of them are named after Russian explorers and Soviet scientists, for example, the Afanasy Nikitin seamount, Academician I.P.Bardin Mountain, Academician D.I.Shcherbakov Mountain, the Obi trench, Vityaz, etc.
