The article justifies an approach to understanding of industrialization of culture as a natural process and universal trend, in many ways determining features of functioning of culture at the current stage of historicalcultural dynamics. The main stages of the process of industrialization of culture in Russia and Western countries are highlighted: from the folding of technological prerequisites to the modern digital era. In the focus of the author’s attention are the factors that determined the specificity of each of the selected stages, as well as the negative consequences of cultural commodification: turning its subject into a “consumer”, reducing culture as a space of values and meanings to the product of industry. The novelty of the work consists in the author’s periodization of industrialization of culture as a world trend, in the differentiation of universal characteristics of this process and its Russian specificity. The article is structured according to a chronological principle with an emphasis on the sustainable trends of the given phenomenon.
