The article considers the role and place of information technologies in the formation of the information society economy. There are two aspects of this problem: information technologies as an object of innovation activity and an independent branch of the economy and information technologies as a basic system for ensuring innovation activity and the economy of the information society as a whole. The problems of the formation of the information society and its economy in Russia are touched upon.
