recognized driver of accelerated economic development of any systems, which necessitates studying their essence and content, the development features of companies in different industries, and determining the most effective tools for innovative development. Russian business is focused on a catch-up model, taking into account innovative tools that have already been tested and have demonstrated economic feasibility and striving to maintain the achieved position. The purpose of the study is to substantiate the need to develop the innovative potential of agricultural enterprises in the Russian Federation and to identify barriers that hinder the active implementation of innovative technologies in the domestic agro-industrial complex. The study used a systematic and logical approach, using the following research methods: scientific abstraction method, monographic, logical, and expert assessment method. Innovations are a key factor in development, bringing significant benefits to companies, society, and the state. The sources of innovations vary significantly in different industries and types of economic activity. The research allows us to identify four groups of industries that differ in the sources of innovation, the features of their implementation, and the impact on the transformation of the industry as a whole and individual companies. The authors conducted surveys of the heads of 60 enterprises operating in various industries, analyzed the sources of success of various Russian companies, which made it possible to determine the factors of their success. They differ, but in general they can be divided into two types: those that create supply of innovations and those that create demand for them. Based on the conducted research, the main barriers hindering active innovation were identified. They are typical for Russian companies, are traditional, and were formed in the process of development of the business environment. Although the leading role in activating innovation belongs to the state, the development of a corporate culture and an innovative business model can take a company to a new level of economic development.
