The article considers approaches to updating the content of work programs of technical disciplines and the methodology underlying them. The potential of patent information as a source of constantly updated information on the latest developments in various fields of knowledge, which can supplement the elements of the content of training future engineers, is presented. A classification of patents is proposed based on the analysis of patent activity in individual indices of the International Patent Classification, which allows us to judge the inventive activity of certain areas, the dynamics of development of individual technologies, trends and prospects in the development of science. The logic of designing the update of the content of training in a technical university is proposed.
