Institute of Language, Literature and History, Komi Science Centre, Ural Branch, RAS: main stages of history (to the 50th anniversary of its creation)

The paper discusses the history of formation and development of one of the largest centers of Finno- Ugric studies - the Institute of Language, Litera- ture and History, Komi Science Centre, Ural Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences: the begin- ning of the humanitarian studies in the Komi re- gion in the 1920s, the organization of the research Institute in the 1930s, the emergence of humani- tarian academic science in the region in 1944- 1960s, the creation and development of an academ- ic institute in 1970-2020. On May 16, 1922, the Society for the study of the Komi region was organized in Ust-Sysolsk, which soon became the center of research activities in the Komi region. Its leaders placed great importance to establishing strong contacts between local re- searchers and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and suggested organizing a research Insti- tute in the Komi region. On May 21, 1931, the Society for the study of the Komi region stopped working. On April 17, 1934, the Komi research Institute of local lore was established in Syktyv- kar. Its employees studied the Komi language, lit- erature, history, economy, and natural resources of the region. In 1941, the Institute was included in the Base of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Komi ASSR and became its Department. On April 1, 1970, the Institute of Language, Litera- ture and History of the Komi Branch, USSR Acad- emy of Sciences, was established. In December 1970, the Institute employed 56 people, including 39 researchers, including 2 doctors and 16 candi- dates of science, in January 2020 – 104 people, including 76 researchers, including 1 academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences, 12 doctors and 48 candidates of science. Main research directions of the Institute: - development of problems of political and socio- economic history, historical demography, tradi- tional and modern culture of the Komi people and other peoples of the European North; - study of the archaeological cultures of the Stone, Metal and Middle Ages of the North of Eurasia; - study of the language, literature and folklore of the Komi and other Permian peoples, problems of interaction of cultures on the territory of Eurasia.
