The article analyzes the specific features that determine the effectiveness of the financial and investment policy of oil and gas companies. The estimation of activity of the Russian oil and gas companies is given. A comparative analysis of the implementation of investment strategies of foreign and domestic companies of the oil and gas sector of the economy. The main problems hindering the investment activity of Russian oil industry companies are revealed.
