The article examines irony as means of the dialogue between the author of the novel and his formal addressee. Irony establishes the communication between the author-narrator and the reader, helps the author to make the novel adequately understandable. The author avoids too much didactics and the reader gets certain freedom in evaluating the characters. So long, the reader becomes able to comprehend fully the author's conception of the novel.
