Islam and ethnicity in Dagestan: peculiarities of mutual influence (on the base of an expert poll)

The article presents the results of an expert survey in the Republic of Dagestan on the correlation of the two most important components of the individual's social identity - ethnic and religious and their mutual influences. The author singles out specific socio-economic factors that contribute to the tension of the ethno-contact situation and, as a result, impede the growth of integration among the Muslims of Dagestan. The article also considers reasons for the discrepancy between the declared and real identification preferences of the peoples of the Dagestan, despite the different socio-psychological patterns underlying their formation.
