Islamism as an attempt at pseudo-religious justification of modern terrorism

The paper analyzes the political phenomenon of Islamism, which is an attempt at destructive politicization and radicalization of Islam as a contemporary religious and cultural movement. It defines the terms of Islamic fundamentalism and Islamism, their characteristics and examines the nature and distinctive features of modern religious terrorism. The research proposes the introduction of public control over religious organizations, the creation of a unified secular ideology and the development of the middle class as a stabilizing element of society. One possible scenario of such ideology is to reinforce civil patriotism based on certain thought forms that unite the image of the past and future development of the peoples of Russia as a unified society. The author emphasizes the need to increase the civil responsibility of media professionals and every citizen of the Russian Federation contributing to the creation of a harmonious media space with the help of Internet technologies.
