The paper describes a custom built collisional induced dissociation (CID) cell with rapid dissociation, and ion transfer. The cell differs from conventional fragmentation cells by the short length (5 cm) and relatively high gas pressure from 30 to 100 mTorr. The cell has a high transfer efficiency of at least 80 % and rapid ion transfer in the range of 10-20 mks. Details are presented on time delay, time spread and energy spread of ion packets as a function of gas pressure. The example of doubly charged ions of gramicidin C there is demonstrated an efficient and information rich fragmentation. The cell appears nearly adequate for tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometers with parallel analysis of all parent ions.
