The article examines the successful experience of comparative literary criticism based on the material of Russian literature of the 19th-21st centuries, with the involvement of the works of Hungarian poets. It has been shown that the author of the monograph largely rethinks I.A. Goncharov’s novels, placing the works of the Russian writer in a wide range of theoretical aspects and a text corpus. The works by A.S. Pushkin, M.Yu. Lermontov, L.N. Tolstoy, A.P. Chekhov, M. Ugarov, V. Sorokin and others are involved in the analysis. The review describes the theoretical, methodological and scientific-historical approaches of the author to the consideration of Goncharov’s novels. Attention is paid to discursive strategy as well as to fundamentally new approaches of A. Molnar to the study of the Russian classical novel, in particular on the analysis of the role of metaphor in the artistic text: not only its sense-creative function, but also genre-forming potential. The author’s desire to show how Goncharov activates poetic and cultural memory of a reader is revealed. An important result to which the study leads is the conclusion that in many respects the literary process is determined not only by sociocultural conditions, but also by the artist’s reflection on previous creative experience. The author of the monograph metaphorically calls such reflection “rewriting”.
