The impact response of honeycomb structure with thin shells made of various materials

The use of honeycomb sandwich panels in the national economy has become widespread recently. Their advantages are the relative lightness with good strength capabilities. The article presents a calculation of the impact response between a honeycomb sandwich panel and an absolutely rigid spherical body. The value of internal and kinetic energy, as well as equivalent stress in a sandwich panel, is determined. The influence of materials of thin skins of sandwich panels on above values is analyzed. The problem is solved with computer simulation of the dynamic process in an explicit formulation. The work results are relevant in the design of structures that combine optimal strength and weight characteristics.
