The study of the life cycles of organizations has led to the emergence of a new scientific field – organizational demography. Identifying the factors that influence the organization’s life cycle is essential for making informed managerial decisions at different levels. This paper examines the relationship between the demographics of organizations and their patent activity, using the example of organizations in the electronic industry in the Novosibirsk region. The Novosibirsk Region has been chosen as a pilot region to test a new approach to assessing the potential for intellectual property development. This region is characterized by a concentration of researchers that is 1.5 times higher than the all-Russian average, as well as the presence of large radioelectronic industry enterprises of federal importance. The patent portfolios of regional universities and scientific institutions are evaluated. It has been established that they are the main patent assignees in the region. However, the level of preparedness developed by universities and scientific institutions is not sufficient to enable a successful technology transfer. The analysis of statistics on the emergence and liquidation of businesses in the real economy, their qualitative composition, as well as the relationship between the average age of a company and the presence of patents, is also conducted. It has been established that organizations with a patent portfolio are more reliable and have a longer lifespan.
