The work deals with separate aspects of the collision of the lumpen and the intellectual in Russian literature. The main focus is on the personality and creative work of F.M. Dostoyevsky, who was the first in Russian literature to reflect the conflict between an intellectual and a lumpen in his «Notes from the Dead House». For Dostoyevsky, the lumpen was a force being hostile both to the intelligentsia and the people. The objective of the intelligentsia is to guard Russian people from lumpenization and thus to save both themselves and Russia in general. The Dostoyevsky' s collision of the lumpen and the intellectual is based on opinion journalism and literary texts.
