In the article the notions of individualism and collectivism as base social and cultural values are investigated. The system-dialectic approach is used. The work consists of two parts. In the present part of the work the evolution of the western civilization beginning from the stage of biological evolution and stages of social evolution are investigated i.e. a primitive society, formation of a class society. It is considered how concepts of individualism and collectivism at these stages were formed.
