The literature on this issue is analyzed. The main historical epochs and periods, events that influenced the development of the black sea region and created toponymic names are considered. Antiquity: Greek colonies, the period of the Bosporan Kingdom, names lost and recreated. Ages: Russian trail - Tmutarakan, trade rivalry, Genoa and its trading posts. The second half of the XV - beginning of the XIX century: the Ottoman Empire and the Crimean khanate, Circassia, the Russian Empire and the beginning of the Cossack colonization of the territory of the North-Western black sea region of Kuban.
