The periodization of stages of formation and development of a banking system and bank activity in Russia taking into account distinctive features of this or that period is offered article that allowed to establish intrinsic characteristics of the studied institute. The top trend expressed in aspiration to formation of a uniform subject of regulation and supervision in the sphere of bank activity is revealed. Need of further improvement of the specified directions of bank activity is established.
