Since 1897, the population of the Yakut region has been subjected to the general census. For twenty years, Yakutia took part in three censuses: the Russian Imperial Census of 1897, the All-Russian Agricultural Census of 1917, and the First All-Union Census of the Soviet Union of 1926. During that time, the Statistics Committee that initiated the censuses and the government of the pre-revolutionary and Soviet Yakutia had a wealth of experience in managing and conducting such an event. The historical facts demonstrated the strong interest of the government in the successful arrangement of censuses. Besides, the attitude of the population towards a census changed a lot. If during the first census people distrusted these activities, later they realized their involvement in everybody’s concern, its necessity and importance.
