The historical experience of Russian entrepreneurship shows that it was both encouraged and firmly controlled and regulated by the state which supported private initiative, economic activity for "common good", charity, but did not tolerate abusive practices and money grabbing. Many prominent entrepreneurs of different social and ethnic background came to realize the social mission of their business activity, and used profits for public benefit. In general that experience was various and conflicting, with both positive and negatives aspects.
