The history and myths of the church in Struzhany

In the article, based on archival documents and memories of local residents, the history of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village of Struzhany, Klepikovsky District, Ryazan Region, is recreated as evidence of human memory and living faith. It is noted that it was built on the site of the previously existing wooden structures of the Resurrection and Assumption Church and it has existed for more than two hundred years. The documentary facts are given, testifying to the special significance of the church for local residents, as well as myths and legends associated with it and stored in the memory of parishioners. The study analyses features of the iconic building and the uniqueness of its architectural design. Moreover, it describes the most valuable cultural and axiological artifacts that belong to the temple, including those that are in storehouses, such as icons of Seraphim of Sarov, Peter and Fevronia, the Mother of God, painted in the “Vasnetsov style”, frescoes of the Church of the Assumption. It is concluded that for a Russian person a church is something more than just a place or a building on Earth, it is a part of the soul of all Orthodox believers. This status of the church in Struzhany of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is beyond doubt
