The article gives a brief history of ornithological research in Siberia from the first systematic expeditions of P. S. Pallas (1768-1775) to the present. The published works provide general information about the birds of various settlements. Special publications devoted to birds of the populated areas in the former Soviet Union, including Siberia, began to appear less than 100-120 years ago. They provide fragmentary information about the species composition of birds in individual, mainly large, cities of the European part of Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Central Asia. Since the 1970s studies of avifauna of Russian settlements became more targeted, but they mainly related to its European part. In Siberia, the study of birds in populated areas began a little later. Since the second half of the 1970s the articles devoted to the birds of urban ecosystems in Western and Central Siberia have been published. The research on synanthropic birds of Southern Siberia began in the 1980s and had been particularly intensive since the beginning of the 21st century. Special works on birds of North-Eastern Siberia began to appear only in the current century. Most of the works are devoted to fauna and population, while less attention is paid to the ecology of synanthropic birds with the exception of common species. Avifauna of many Siberian settlelments remains poorly studied.
