The article deals with the history of studying the Mesolithic and Neolithic sites in the Lower Volga region. The author overviews various theories regarding this problem with a special emphasis on the presence of geometric microliths in the stone inventory at the sites of the Lower Volga region. He also pays attention to the cultural and chronological definition of microliths of geometric shape in the researchers' works.
