The author of this article considers Konstantin Aksakov’s work with historical, folklore and literary sources. The author recreates Aksakov’s historical and cultural conception, in which the subject of interpretation is not only concrete facts, connected with the real history and culture, but also the aesthetic potential of past events. On the basis of various works by Aksakov (using the historical literary method), the author identifies the main thought of one of the key Slavophiles: the development of Russian culture was predetermined by Russia’s acceptance and interpretation of Christianity. The presence of ethical dilemmas in Aksakov’s work testifies to the importance of studying ontological questions in Russian culture
