“The history of a town” by M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin: problems of text studies

Saltykov-Shchedrin revised each of the lifetime editions of “The History of a Town” (the magazine publication, monoeditions of 1870, 1879, 1883). Significant changes and additions to the edition of 1870 are related to the building of the history of a town, which on the one hand would allow considering Glupov as a city-state and on the other hand would not contradict the Russian history at least at first sight.
