History of formation of the institute of witness in criminal proceedings

Based on the analysis of the key monuments of Russian law, this article examines the process of formation and development of the institute of witnessing in criminal proceedings. Attention is focused on the role of the witness and the place of testimony in the system of evidence in criminal cases. In addition, the state of the institute of witnessing, regulated by the current criminal procedure legislation, is considered.
