The authors summarize the results of the study of the ethnic and demographic processes which took place in the forest-steppe and steppe zone of the Middle Volga and Trans-Volga regions, i.e., in the core of the South-East of European Russia. They reveal the peculiarities of formation of the multi-ethnic and multi-confessional population, characterize the specifics of interactions between different ethnic groups, and also between local population and the royal administration.
