The study examined the historical background to initial vocational education in Kuban region in the late 19th - early 20th centuries. In this period, education was the first priority for both educators and public figures of Kuban region. Vocational, trade schools and other educational institutions played an important role in the region’s public life against the background of the rapid growth of capitalist relations and the need for skilled workers. In the author’s opinion, it is reasonable to learn from previous educational experience at the current stage of education reforms. Due to the lack of research into initial vocational education in Kuban region, the author discussed the establishment of medical and agricultural educational institutions, teacher’s seminary, Sunday school for workers, private music school, commercial school, electricity courses for adults, and the network of vocational schools. The following facts were revealed. The significant developments took place in women’s education, in particular the Mariinsky Women’s School was transformed into the institute. As for Cossacks’ education, the Cossack community regarded school as a historical tradition and a fundamental need.
