At present the problem of overweight and obesity prevalence among population has become epidemic and can threaten socio-economic development of the territory. The article describes ways of overcoming this negative trend at the regional level. Using the Vologda Oblast as an example the authors show the importance of the control of overweight and obesity that are significant factors for heavy mortality in non-communicable diseases. In particular, the article reveals correlations between body mass, overweight, and the development of arterial hypertension, atherosclerosis, and pancreatic diabetes. The authors suggest methods to reduce these diseases prevalence through the formation of population’s healthy lifestyle. The authors base the study on the works of Russian and foreign experts, public statistics, and data of 10-years-long representative monitoring of behavioral risk factors for non-communicable diseases among the Vologda Oblast population, including overweight and obesity. The monitoring was conducted in accordance with the WHO international program of integrated prevention of non-communicable diseases CINDI. The conducted research reveals high prevalence of overweight among people of both sexes (54% respondents) and obesity among women. The authors determine improper feeding and hypodynamia as the main causes of overweight and obesity of the region’s population.
