Study of mathematical statistics by geology students: necessary minimum

The most important themes for students-geologists on probability theory and mathematical statistics have been proved. The analysis of actual mathematics teaching process was made, which revealed that mathematics had not been used in geology and that the students showed lack of any fundamental knowledge of mathematics (according to the test). The correct set of complexes for study and application, closely connected to the most probable areas of graduate geologists’ activity, was suggested. The relevance of the article consists in the selection rationale of the most important sections of mathematical statistics, which are necessary to study by future geologists for their practical work and scientific researches.
