Ivan Popov-Veniaminov (Saint Innocent Metropolitan of Moscow) was an orthodox missionary and one of the leading Russian scientist of XIX th century. He made a great contribution not only into the dissemination of Christianity, but also into the study of geography of North-East Asia and North America and languages and culture of the peoples of Beringia. The article reveals the significance of the works of Ivan V. Popov-Veniaminov in the study of religion and emphasizes his place in the history of Russian religion studies. The author notes that Saint Innocent made a great contribution into the formation of such hemispheres of religious knowledge as history, anthropology, psychology of religion, religious philosophy, comparative religion studies, etc.
