In the article the role and functions of language in the system of ethnic consciousness are revealed through interaction with other ethnic signs. The language is viewed by the author as one of the basic elements in ethnic external identification and internal self-identification. Language system is a product of historical development of ethnos and is closely connected with its genesis and history.
