The range of issues associated with the awareness of the importance of competent language policy and its unifying potential for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is outlined in the article. Answers to these questions make it possible to retrospectively analyze the problems of language integration of the post-Soviet countries which will allow to find the right solution in the future.
